First United Methodist Church once again needs a little bit of help keeping the “community” in its annual Community Thanksgiving dinner.

The church is hard at work getting ready to serve nearly 1,500 Thanksgiving meals. These  will be provided for free to anyone who wants them next week.

The reality is the majority of the individuals being fed wouldn’t have a Thanksgiving dinner any other way.

Anyone who is in need of this home-cooked meal can call the church office to request delivery or simply come to the church fellowship hall after 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

As if preparing turkey, gravy, stuffing and all the fixings for a small army wasn’t enough, the majority of the meals will be delivered throughout the county by volunteers.

Over the years the event has truly grown beyond just a church function and has really become a powerful force impacting the community, with more than half of the individuals volunteering coming from outside the First United Methodist congregation.

But more help is needed.

We hope to see those who don’t have other commitments or those who are looking to start a new family tradition step up to help the church continue this critical mission.

People needed to help serve meals at the church or just visit with those who come in to eat.

Volunteers can sign up by calling the church office at 744-5410 or showing up Thursday around 10 a.m. at the church, 204 S. Main St.

We applaud the church and its leadership for their commitment to this project that truly touches the lives of so many.

This selflessness and giving spirit embodies what Thanksgiving is all about and the fact that so many Clark Countians holds this in high regard is something for which we can all be thankful.
