This year will soon be over. A new year is quickly approaching.

I would like to invite you to join a community organization this year.

As I began writing this column, I was reminded of all the good the clubs in this county do. Yesterday as I attended the AARP board meeting, I was reminded of this once more.

The board met to disperse the money that accumulated through the year. I was so impressed at the good this group alone does and how far it will go to benefit our community.

AARP is a wonderful group to meet with once a month. The meeting begins with a potluck meal and the fellowship with one another is always great. 

A wonderful guest speaker speaks during the meeting. They usually speak about something of interest to all. It is usually about something pertaining to the community or how different areas in the county are run the way they are. A question-and-answer time follows each speaker where you can speak of your concerns or ask your questions about why something is done. 

At one meeting you may be entertained by singers or a young person who has excelled at school. It is just always a good meeting. 

The meetings are held at the Generations Center. If you go, you may be like me and be glad you attended the meeting. 

So, if you are not involved in a community organization now, the new year will soon begin, what what better time to become involved with a community group.

The dues for AARP are only $6 to join for the upcoming year. The next meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 5. The meal at will be turkey and the trimmings, so bring a guest and a dish and join this group to see if you might like it and become a member next year.

After all, you just might make a friend for life. I have made new friends and become closer with those I already knew this year. Next year, you too can know you have done good for the community while enjoying yourself in the process.

Pick a group and join for the new year.
