Winchester firefighters pulled a woman and her dog from a burning mobile home Monday morning.

The fire was reported at 9:17 a.m. at 525 Kiwi Drive in the Quick Shop Trailer Park. Winchester Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Jason Keller said the fire had already spread to a neighboring home when the first units arrived.

The woman, whose name was not available at press time, told firefighters she didn’t know what started the fire, Keller said.

The woman, who owned the residence, said she woke up and saw the fire burning, he said.

She was treated and released with possible smoke inhalation and a few scrapes, Keller said.

The fire caused extensive damage to 525 Kiwi Drive, though the cause remains under investigation.

The heat also damaged the exterior of 527 Kiwi Drive. Interior damage was from firefighters’ suppression efforts rather than the fire, he said.

The two homes, he said, were about 25 feet apart, though the porch on 525 narrowed that distance to about 15 feet.

“Exposure is our greatest issue when homes are close together,” Keller said. “In this case, the exterior of (527 Kiwi) was already” burning when firefighters arrived.

Most of the firefighters were on scene for a little more than two hours, though investigators remained into the afternoon.
