With a winter storm due to hit central Kentucky this afternoon with ice and snow, local officials say they are ready for whatever arrives.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory effective at 10 a.m. today, when rain is expected to change to freezing rain. By mid-afternoon, it is expected to change to snow with accumulation by tonight.

“It looks like we’re shooting for a tenth of an inch of ice and two to three inches of snow possibly,” Clark County Road Supervisor Kevin Wilson said. “We’ve got everything ready to go. We got some salt (Thursday) but we’ve got plenty.”

Winchester City Manager Matt Belcher said the city is in good shape as well, after meeting with Public Works Director Pat Clark Thursday afternoon.

“We’re as prepared as we can be for this type of thing,” Belcher said. “The crews will start pushing snow as soon as it begins.”

The city is well-stocked with salt as well, he said.

“They’ve got a full shed,” Belcher said. “We’re loaded. The trucks are already filled.”

Wilson said he plans to send trucks out when the temperatures start dropping to spread salt across the county to keep the ice at bay.

“When the snow starts, we’ll deal with it then,” he said.

The advisory is currently scheduled to end at 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
