Students win essay, art contest

After more than 300 local students competed in the annual Jim Claypool Conservation Art and Writing Contest sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau and the Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts, two from Clark County will go on to compete in the state-level competition.
This year’s theme was “Water is Life! 100% Guaranteed.” The Clark County art winner was selected from 220 entries, while the county essay winner was selected from 105 entries. Judges from the local conservation district chose county winners, whose entries then move on to the state-level competition. Winners were selected from each participating school and a county-wide winner was selected from the art contest and the essay contest.
Hailey Penn from Calvary Christian School was selected as the overall county winner in the art contest, and George Rogers Clark High School student Lauren Brinegar was selected as the overall county essay contest winner.
Students across the county in grades kindergarten through fifth grade competed in the Conservation Art Contest.

Ella Howton, Hailey Penn and Sloane Burton had the top poster entries from Calvary Christian School. Penn was selected as the Calvary Christian School art winner and the overall county Winner.
Students across the county in sixth- through 12th-grade competed in the Conservation Writing Contest.
Emma Durrence, Jessica Young and Zechariah Ross had the top essay entries from Baker Intermediate School. Young was selected as the Baker Intermediate School essay winner.
Lauren Brinegar and Chase Taulbee had the top essay entries from GRC.
Brinegar was selected as the GRC high school essay winner and the overall county winner.
Each of the school and county winners will be recognized at the Clark County Conservation Districts Annual Banquet in April.
