Officials have identified the person killed after being struck by a vehicle overnight on Irvine Road.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said 49-year-old Archie Godwin, of 1704 Pilot View Road, was pronounced dead at the scene around 11:20 p.m. Friday.

Perdue said the driver, John D. Cole of Beattyville, told deputies he was traveling southbound on Irvine Road (Kentucky 89) when he suddenly saw a person in the road.

“He said he was about to hit the person and tried to swerve,” Perdue said. “He couldn’t avoid hitting him.”

Perdue said the vehicle never left the roadway. The driver was not injured.

Deputies suspect Godwin was walking home in the middle of the roadway when he was struck, Perdue said.

“It was totally an accident,” Perdue said. “There is no type of criminal investigation. We did take blood for toxicology from the driver, but at this point, there is no suspected drugs or alcohol involved.”

Perdue said anyone who does walk near roadways at night should be careful to walk on the shoulder, wear reflective clothing or “at the very least light-colored clothing that would contrast with the darkness and make the person visible.”
