A Winchester man pleaded guilty to an assault charge after cutting a man on both legs last summer.

Kim Dwight Dearing, 46, was charged with second-degree assault following the July 30 incident near Church Alley in downtown Winchester.

On Thursday, Dearing pleaded guilty to an amended charge of assault under extreme emotional disturbance. Prosecutors offered a three-year prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea.

Dearing’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 8 in Clark Circuit Court.

According to Winchester Police, the incident followed a fight between Dearing and the victim, Mark Wooten.

During Dearing’s preliminary hearing in district court last summer, detectives testified Wooten said Dearing had made comments about Wooten’s wife. Wooten told police he punched Dearing and there was a fight. Wooten said he got up and Dearing started cutting him with a knife.

Wooten was flown from Clark Regional Medical Center to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with serious injuries from the incident. Police said during the hearing it took more than 40 staples to close the wounds.

Following his arrest, Dearing told police he had been assaulted by two people. He was following them up the alley when he was assaulted again. He said he had a knife and he swung it at the others, but didn’t know if he injured anyone.
