Who knew cookies could help save a pet’s life?

The girls of Girl Scout Troop 2018 decided to use part of the proceeds from their cookie sales to buy three sets of pet-sized oxygen masks for Winchester Fire-EMS.

“We decided to do something to give back to our community,” Troop Leader Janice Eldridge said. “Winchester did not (have any) so we bought three sets of pet oxygen masks that will be kept with the battalion chiefs.”

Eldridge said the kits cost $90 each and included three different-sized masks to use on animals in fires. The masks are reusable, she said.

Eldridge said the troop started two years ago and is based at Justice Elementary School. This year, they have 27 girls between Kindergarten and fourth grade. The project was also part of a badge for giving to the community.

“This is giving back to our community,” Eldridge  said. “This is where our money goes.”

“We did not have anything like this,” Winchester Fire-EMS Chief Cathy Rigney said. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

In other action Tuesday, the Winchester Board of Commissioners:

— approved street closure requests for several car shows, contingent upon input from Main Street Winchester.
