Winchester and Clark County have joined forces to honor Korean War veterans with signs marking where the 38th parallel runs through Clark County.

The 38th parallel is the dividing line between North and South Korea, as established by a ceasefire in 1953.

Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner said there is a state program to place signs honoring veterans at places where the parallel crosses public roads. Burtner said Clark County GIS identified three locations in the city: near the intersection of Fulton and Bypass roads, on Veterans Memorial Parkway near Kentucky 15 and on Maple Street near the railroad tracks.

There may be more locations in the county, which could be added later, including one near the 2-mile marker on the Mountain Parkway.

Wednesday, Burtner approached the Clark County Fiscal Court about splitting the cost of the signs with the city. Burtner said the cost would be $1,000 per location, rather than the $2,000 he quoted during the Winchester Board of Commissioners meeting last week.

Both bodies voted unanimously to approve the project and to split the cost of $3,000 for the three city sites. Burtner said the city would also split the cost of any signs installed in the county.
