Conkwright students collect donations for Clark animal shelter at reading event

Conkwright Elementary students and their families put on the dog and collected food and supplies for the Clark County Animal Shelter.
Tuesday, the school donated the dog and cat food, pet toys and cleaning supplies to Clark County Animal Shelter Director Adreanna Wills.

The supply drive was part of the school’s Title I family night, Conkwright reading interventionist Lisa Reece said. The entire student body recently read the novel “Shyloh,” which is about a dog who adopts a boy in a West Virginia town.
“Each day, the teacher would read a chapter with their students,” Reece said.
The theme of the book carried over into family night, with a meal of hot dogs and Scooby snacks, she said. Families were asked to bring items to give to the shelter.
Students cold also “adopt” stuffed dogs that night, have them checked by a veterinarian and learn about the responsibilities involved in having pets.
“This worked out great,” Reece said. “We’re overwhelmed with the amount of donations.“
“The shelter wouldn’t be able to work as well as we do without the support of the public,” Wills said.
