Annual cross walk marks Good Friday

Despite the cold, rainy weather, about 300 people participated in Friday’s annual Unity March and Crosswalk and the community Good Friday Service that followed.

People took turns carrying the cross about a half mile down Main Street from the Winchester Municipal Utilities parking lot to the First Baptist Church on Lexington Avenue, where a few people helped place the cross in the ground.

The Winchester-Clark County Association of Churches sponsored the event.

Tony Stang, a pastor of First Baptist Church, shared a devotional at the cross.

“Good Friday is not a tragedy,” Stang said at the devotional. “It is a triumph.”

After the walk, participants joined other residents for the Good Friday service and the fellowship that followed.

Jeff Gaines, a pastor of Christ Church Winchester, also spoke at the service and the First Baptist Church worship team led a time of worship and singing.

Clark County Community Services also collected an offering to support the transient ministry.

Stang said the tradition has been going on for about 40 years, and it celebrates Good Friday’s significance.

“It’s a clear picture that Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice,” Stang said.
