While Mother Nature has been teasing Clark County and central Kentucky with glimpses of spring, the forecast looks good for community clean-up events set for this weekend.

Winchester Inspired by Nature is having its first Neighbors Connect picnic and litter pick-up event this weekend at College Park. There will be events both days with the litter pick-up Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. followed by a community picnic Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.

“What we hope is we’ll do a neighborhood picnic in each of the six city parks,” WIN member Julie Kerber said.

The event is the result of a number of discussions with Winchester residents, she said, with the three dominant themes people wanting to connect with others, to be safe and know what was happening in the community.

The Neighbors Connect event is actually two events. On Saturday morning, people will meet in College Park to begin collecting litter around the park, she said. Ale-8-One donated drinks and all participants will receive a voucher for Kathy’s Snack Shack, a food truck which will be at the park for Sunday’s community picnic.

The picnic is open to everyone in the community, and not just the immediate neighborhoods around College Park, she said.

“We want this to be a picnic … to get everyone together,” Kerber said.

There will be music, a food truck and other entertainment. People are welcome to bring their own picnic, she said.

“We’re happy for people to come,” Kerber said. “The kids will enjoy it and the parents will enjoy it.”

For other spring cleaning, Clark County is hosting a household hazardous material collection day. Items will be accepted from Clark County residents from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Clark County Road Department, 5 Hopkins Lane. To find out what is accepted, call 737-0303.

There will also be a community genealogy event Saturday afternoon at the Clark County Public Library. Hosted by the African-American Genealogy Group of Kentucky and the Winchester Black History and Heritage Commission, participants can use a number of methods including census data and published records to research Clark County families. Other information will be shared and there will be attempts to identify people in a number of photos.

The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
