Astronauts, gymnasts, inventors, pioneers, first ladies and more gathered inside the Calvary Christian School chapel Friday.

Stepping in the wax museum, visitors pushed small red buttons on a third-grader’s hand and traveled through time, listening to the tales of 26 important historical figures.

Visitors could learn about Pocahontas, Grace Hopper, Sandra Day O’Connor, Laura Ingalls, Davy Crockett, Alexander Graham Bell, Mary Lou Retton, Betsy Ross, John Glenn, Albert Einstein, Wilbur Wright, Anne Sullivan, Naomi Parker-Fraley, Daniel Boone, Neil Armstrong, Shirley Temple, Ella Fitzgerald, Georgia O’Keeffe, Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller and more.

Lisa Turner, a third-grade teacher at Calvary, said the annual wax museum dives deeper into history, and this year, there were a lot of prominent women featured.

She said it also teaches students how to do oral presentations.

“We try to do characters who are not typically done like in your history and we try to go beyond what’s in the history book, and this year, I tried to pull in more of the arts,” Turner said.

Lila Morgan, a third-grader, presented as Helen Keller. She said she enjoyed doing the wax museum for the first time.

“I knew a little bit (about Helen Keller), not a lot but this helped,” Morgan said.

Allison Moore, a second-grader, said she went through various stations, but her favorite was Mary Loy Retton, an American Olympic gymnast.

“I like (Mary Lou Retton) because I do gymnastics,” she said.

Mary Hurst, a third-grade teacher at Calvary, said the wax museum is an interactive and fun way to teach history.

“We just love history and any way we can challenge and encourage (the students) to love history,” she said.
