Construction students in the George Rogers Clark High School-Area Technical Center classes built sheds to place around town for a good cause.

People can drop off aluminum cans placed in bags at the sheds around town.

Sheds are located at Lowe’s, the 96 Truck Stop, Campbell Junior High School, the Waterfront Restaurant and one will be placed at the Winchester ReStore when it opens.

The Madison and Clark Counties Habitat for Humanity affiliate collects the cans to recycle and uses the money to help build houses.

The local Habitat affiliate has built more than 100 affordable housing solutions in Winchester, Berea and Richmond, according to the website.

The group continues to develop or rehab three to five homes per year.

Russ Barclay, executive director at the Madison-Clark affiliate, said it takes a community to help build homes.

“It really is a community effort,” he said.

Habitat gave the students the blueprints and parts list to make the sheds, but the students did all of the manual labor.

Barclay said using the sheds helps the Earth and helps builds homes.

“It’s kind of like a piggy bank for us,” Barclay said. “…People can come recycle cans and help the Earth, then we recycle the money to help build houses.”
