George Rogers Clark battled through adversity Wednesday after a slow start to run away with a 15-5 victory against Madison Southern in six innings.

Jake Ware started hot for the Cardinals as he hit a deep shot to centerfield and sent Dakota Puckett home for the first run of the game.

The second inning was a struggle for GRC as they allowed four hits to Eagles and allowed them to take the lead.

GRC found its rhymth late in the third inning to earn eight runs in the inning.

They went through the entire batting lineup one time and giving Bo Billings, Cameron Dove and Dakota Puckett two chances at the plate in the inning.

The Cards earned four walks and Billings, Jake Ware, Ethan Neal and Brady Turner all collected hits in the inning and Billings had two hits to give GRC a 9-3 lead.

Madison Southern did not count itself out of the game just yet as they collected a two-run home run in the fourth inning followed by a triple to bring the score to 9-5.

Bo Billings seen the most action for GRC has he rounded up four hits for the game and went 4-4 including two singles in the third inning and one in the fifth inning.

He then went on to smack a double in the sixth inning to bring the lead to 10 runs and run-rule the game.

Neal started on the mound for the Cards and gave up five runs on five hits through four innings and walked none.

Billings came in the fifth inning as a relief pitcher and earned one strikeout.

GRC piled up 11 hits in the game with Ware and Billings being the only players to have multiple hits.

Billings was pleased with how the team played.

“We played pretty good as team,” he said. “We had 11 hits so it was not a bad day at all.”

Turner agreed that the bats were on fire.

“We played well,” he said. “The bats came alive today. We needed that win.”

Billings admits that his team struggled to end the second inning when Madison Southern took the lead.

“You have those innings in baseball that you have to fight through,” he said. “They happen to everybody, but you just have to find a way out.”

Turner said that the situations that his team practices all year really helps them fight through controversy.

“Stuff happens and that’s where practice comes in to play,” he said. “We’ve been working on fielding ground balls and turn around to throw them out so it has paid off for us so far.”

The last time the two teams met, Madison Southern run-ruled GRC and went on to defeat them 14-4 through five innings.

Billings said it felt good to have his team redeem themselves.

“It felt really good to retaliate against them like that,” he said. “Especially against a pitcher of that caliber in the first inning.”

Turner agreed.

“We wanted to beat them really bad,” he said. “We were looking forward to this game for revenge because we did not play up to our capabilities the last time we played.”

The Cards have now improved to 17-5 on the season and Billings and Turner have been impressed with how much they’ve improved since the beginning.

“We’ve had tremendous improvements,” Billings said. “Our team chemistry has gotten a lot better. We’ve adjusted to the new coach very well and we are ready to make this post season run.”

“Our team has put it together perfectly,” Turner said. “Since the beginning of the season, we weren’t very close. Now we’re closer than ever and ready to take on anything.”

GRC will head to Scott County on May 11 and will not have another home game until May 16 against Garrard County.
