Winchester residents might see a familiar face when watching the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Saturday.

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church, will preach to a worldwide audience at the wedding, but not long ago Curry preached at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. He visited the Winchester church in May 2016, Carol Berry, Senior Warden at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, said.

Berry said the entire church was excited when they heard he would be preaching at the royal wedding.

“We were thrilled having had the privilege of having him at the church speaking,” she said. “He’s a wonderful speaker.”

Berry said Curry was friendly and she isn’t surprised he was given the honor of preaching the royal wedding as he is a well-traveled man and good friends with the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, who will officiate the ceremony.

Curry was visiting the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington in 2016 and stopped by Episcopal churches in Central Kentucky. He was elected as the presiding bishop of The Episcopal Church in July 2015, serving a nine-year term, Berry said.

Berry said Curry was visiting because of a special election held at the time to determine the next bishop provisional of the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. The Winchester Emmanuel Episcopal Church had the pleasure of hosting Curry during that time, she said.

The royal wedding service, held at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, will be conducted by the Dean of Windsor, David Conner.  Many television networks are planning live coverage of the wedding beginning around 5 a.m., with the service at 7 a.m. Eastern Time.

Berry said she is going to wake up early to watch the service and hopes others will too.

“I wouldn’t miss it,” she said.

Berry said serviced at Emmanual Episcopal Church are open to everyone on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. at the church and Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Gaunce’s Deli.
