A Winchester man and his girlfriend were arrested Thursday on abuse charges after his 4-year-old child got a broken arm.

Steven Wasson, 36, and 21-year-old Nicole Duncan, both of 300 C.G. Stephenson Drive Apt. 202, were arrested after they were indicted recently by the Clark County grand jury for a single count of first-degree criminal abuse.

Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said detectives opened their investigation in March following a report by state social workers after the child was brought to the University of Kentucky Medical Center with a number of suspicious injuries.

Through the investigation, Hall said the evidence showed Duncan was the aggressor in the situation while Wasson was aware, but did nothing to stop or prevent it.

Hall said Duncan admitted to causing the injuries, which includes bumps and bruises as well as the broken arm.

“It was an argument and frustration of taking care of the child” which led to the broke arm, Hall said. Duncan also admitted to striking the child several times “as a form of discipline.”

The child was removed from the home prior to the investigation, Hall said.

Wasson and Duncan are both being held in the Clark County Detention Center on a $20,000 cash bond, according to the jail website.
