Some Sphar voters given wrong ballot

Some voters at the Sphar precinct may not have voted for all the candidates they could have because of a ballot mishap Tuesday morning.

A poll worker at the Sphar precinct handed out nonpartisan ballots instead of partisan ballots until a Democratic voter questioned why Amy McGrath wasn’t on the ballot they had been given, Clark County Clerk Michelle Turner said.

The error was caught at 8:54 a.m., nearly three hours after polls opened.

Turner said she complied with the Secretary of State’s recommended response, noted it in the sheriff’s report and sent one of her clerks to monitor the precinct the remainder of the day.

Turner said it’s unclear how many people were mistakenly given the nonpartisan ballots.

However, she said the clerk’s office will continue to look into it, and may have a better idea of the number in a few days.

Nonpartisan ballots included the mayor’s race and the city commission race.

The votes cast on those ballots will still be counted, Turner said.

The Sphar precinct is the largest precinct and the poll workers were in charge of five ballots, Turner said.
