Full slate of holiday, veterans events scheduled

Memorial Day weekend means a lot of things to different people: the unofficial start of summer, swimming pools open for the season, or just a long holiday weekend.

There will be several events happening in Clark County to honor the real reason for the holiday: remembering those who fought and died in the country’s wars through the centuries.

Saturday evening, the Clark County Coon Hunters Association will host their annual flag retirement ceremony and veteran appreciation ceremony. The event is open to all veterans as well as those who support veterans.

There will also be a special remembrance and tribute for all who died while serving in the military.

The ceremonies will be at the Association’s club house at 3601 Pine Ridge Road beginning at 6 p.m.

Another group of 76 veterans, including 10 from Clark County, from World War II, Korea and Vietnam will spend Saturday touring the nation’s memorials with Honor Flight Kentucky. The chapter, now in its third year, is flying the veterans and an equal number of guardians for a one-day trip to Washington, D.C.

The public, though, is invited to Blue Grass Airport at 9 p.m. Saturday to welcome everyone back home. To find out more, go to honorflightkentucky.org.

On Memorial Day itself, the Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter will have its annual ceremony behind the Clark County Courthouse. The event, which begins at noon Monday, will include a speaker and will honor both active duty military personnel, prisoners of war, those who died while service and those who are missing in action.

CrossFit Strode Station is hosting Memorial Day “Murph” workouts Monday.

The class times are 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a barbecue following the 11 a.m. class, CCFSS employee Rachel Ellis said.

The workout is named after Lt. Michael Murphy who was killed in action in Afghanistan, she said.

Both the workout and barbecue are free.

Ellis said CFSS does ask anyone attending the barbecue to bring a side dish of some sort if they can; CFSS is providing all the meat.

The workouts and barbecue will be held at the CrossFit Strode Station gym at 4793 Rockwell Road.

Ellis said this is an annual event held across the nation.

“It’s a really intense workout, and it’s done to honor all our fallen soldiers,” she said.

For more information, people can follow the CrossFit Strode Station Facebook page, Ellis said.
