Stuff Recycling reopened Thursday following a massive fire that spanned for a few days.

Owner Jerry Joiner said Stuff Recycling is fully operational and ready to roll.

“You wouldn’t even know (the fire) happened,” he said.

Clark County Fire Chief Ernie Barnes told the Sun the call came in about 4 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Stuff, located at 6169 Lexington Road.

According to the Stuff website, the facility exchanges various types of metal scrap for cash and works with commercial and non-commercial customers. The facility accepts everything from cans and household appliances to industrial scrap.

The fire blazed for nearly 48 hours and was under control Monday, Barnes said. Now, the department is investigating the possible cause of the fire.

Joiner said the fire occurred in its “miscellaneous pile” — about 200-feet long, 60- to 70-feet wide and 30-feet high at first estimates — which had items such as cars, lawn mowers, mattresses and various scrap metals.

The fire was difficult to put out because of the lack of water supply, Barnes said. At least 30 area fire departments assisted.

The department also protected two adjacent buildings which were about 50-feet away from the fire. One of the buildings is a new addition, Joiner said.

“They made sure the building didn’t sustain damage,” Joiner said.

Joiner said despite the massive fire, Stuff didn’t lose a lot of material and will sell the remaining material.

Next week, Stuff will host a community cookout 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 22, to celebrate a grand reopening with its new building and to also thank the community for its support during the fire.

“Our biggest thing is putting out appreciation to the community, the fire departments, the sheriff department and everyone that reached out to help us,” Joiner said. “With all of the bad stuff going on in the world, it was nice to see something good. So we want to thank the community.”
