A Winchester man allegedly took an unlocked car that was left running and led police in a high-speed chase into Fayette County Tuesday morning.

Keontez Hazley, 28, is facing multiple charges, including running from officers once he got out of the vehicle.

According to court documents, Winchester Police were called to Speedway, 1480 W. Lexington Ave., at 4:57 a.m. Tuesday after someone took a Toyota Highlander that had been left running and unlocked. Witnesses said the vehicle headed toward Interstate 64 and officers followed it toward Lexington.

Officers noted the driver and vehicle refused to stop and continued into Fayette County. At one point, the driver turned the car’s headlights off, according to the citation.

Once the vehicle reached Newtown Pike in Lexington, officers said the driver stopped suddenly in the road and fled on foot. The driver, identified as Hazley, was located and arrested.

Officers wrote Hazley admitted to taking the vehicle and running from police.

Hazley was charged with theft by unlawful taking (auto), first-degree fleeing or evading police (two counts), failure to illuminate headlights, reckless driving, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended operator’s license.

He was lodged in the Clark County Detention Center and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Clark District Court.
