Blending retail opportunities with community development in a way that very few other organizations can match, Habitat for Humanity of Clark and Madison Counties newest Re-Store will be a welcome addition here.

The unique business, opening Saturday in the former site of the Sears store in Colby Station Shopping Center, will be a great benefit for the community.

First and foremost, the concept is important to understand. Habitat’s ReStores accept gently used or new furniture, building supplies, appliances and home accessories and then resell them to the public. The proceeds are then used to help fund Habitat projects in the two counties.

It will certainly fill a niche here and we hope to see the community truly embrace both sides of the concept.

The Winchester ReStore will be the seventh in Kentucky, including Lexington, Richmond, Georgetown and Louisville, and one of about 900 nationwide. They have become integral to the success of the organization that has, locally, built more than 100 homes in Clark and Madison counties and rehabilitated others. The organization plans to build or rehabilitate three to five homes a year.

As with any business, success is almost entirely driven by whether or not consumers embrace it. We have faith that Clark County consumers will do just that.

The organization has lots planned for Saturday’s grand opening celebration. Festivities are scheduled to run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., including free food. Habitat is also giving away a car, which is sponsored by Town and Country Auto.

But even if you don’t make it to the event, there will be plenty of time to stop in to show your support.

Great things are happening here in Clark County. We just need to keep building on the momentum with a positive attitude and a commitment to supporting our local businesses.
