Bargain hunters swarmed Winchester’s new Habitat for Humanity ReStore Saturday on its opening day.

Everything from televisions to tables to major appliances left for new homes as eager buyers loaded up on deals.

“I hope it stays like this,” store director Michael Richardson said, after helping one customer load a stove into a pickup truck while looking at the long line at the checkout counter.

The Winchester store is one of several in the region, including Lexington and Richmond, and the store directly funds the building projects by Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties, Richardson said.

The ReStores offer used furniture, appliances along with building supplies, housewares and some construction materials. Beyond the opening weekend, Richardson said everything offered in the store will come from Clark County. All the proceeds will also go toward Habitat projects in Clark County.

Habitat for Humanity rehabilitates or builds new homes, which homeowners will pay through a low-interest loan. Homeowners are also required to contribute a number of hours in “sweat equity” on their home as it is built.

Winchester’s store was announced in April and fills the former Sears space in the Colby Station shopping center on Bypass Road.

Richardson said the staff is always looking for more items for the store.

“We still need donations,” Richardson said. “We’re looking for large donations of gently-used furniture, working appliances, building materials, housewares and cabinets.”

With notice, Habitat will come and remove cabinets for free, he said.
