Teachers may enjoy summer break as much as students, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about their students.

Tuesday, a group of teachers and staff from Conkwright Elementary loaded a crate of books and coolers filled with popsicles before going to visit children in one of Conkwright’s neighborhoods.

Conkwright Principal Julie Bonfield said the new program will continue once a week through July.

“The idea is to let our kids know we’re thinking about them,” Bonfield said. “They get excited about seeing us as we are to see them.”

During the first week in the Cook and Mutual Avenue area, teachers gave away about 80 popsicles and as many books, she said. The books were gathered by the school’s family resource center and a book drive by Educators Rising group at George Rogers Clark High School, she said. They also took books appropriate for younger or older siblings in the household, she said.

The Family Resource Center purchases a lot of books for our kids,” Bonfield said.

Teachers, and sometimes their children, will make the deliveries, she said.

“We go door to door,” she said. “Even if they have kids younger than 5, we have books for them.”

Next week, the teachers plan to go to the Tyler Banks neighborhood, and Pilot View and Fox’s Grocery the following week, Bonfield said.
