Magistrates got some good financial news when the county closed fiscal year 2018 with more than $3 million in cash on hand.

In a note distributed Monday, Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham said it was the first time the county did that in nearly two decades. The figure includes cash balances for the general fund, road department fund and jail fund.

At the end of fiscal year 2004, Branham, who was treasurer at the time, said the county had $12,000 on hand.

“Our county employees, in all departments, have stepped up to continue to provide a level of service to our citizens even with all the adjustments that have occurred over the past years,” Branham wrote.

At one point, Branham said the county had to cut vacation at the county fire department and “froze everything” for the county to survive.

“Our department supervisors know their budgets and their operating policy,” Branham wrote. “I am convinced that Clark County citizens are getting the best departments in the state because of our supervisors.”
