A caretaker pleaded guilty Tuesday to abusing and neglecting an adult after taping the door to his room shut in 2016.

Billy Gross Spicer was an employee of Evergreen Community Supports in 2016, according to court records, as a caretaker for a person who required around-the-clock care.

Evergreen offers support services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The company has a Winchester site.

Spicer pleaded guilty to one count of wantonly abusing or neglecting an adult, which was reduced as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Once he is sentenced in August, Spicer will have to complete a five-year supervised diversion.

Charges of first-degree unlawful imprisonment and terroristic threatening were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. His sentencing hearing was scheduled for Aug. 16 in Clark Circuit Court.

According to court records, the incident happened March 28, 2016, when Spicer admitted to leaving the person in his room without contact or care.

As part of the plea agreement, Spicer would be added to the state’s caregivers misconduct registry through the attorney general’s office, which could prevent him from working as a caretaker in federally-funded programs.

Less than a month ago, Spicer was found competent to stand trial, following an examination at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center.

Spicer remains free on bond until his sentencing hearing before Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue.
