AARP Chapter 632 met June 26 with 16 members and guests present. President Elizabeth Gay presided.

Following a potluck meal, the attendees heard from Rosalinda Gay, director of the Strode Station Family Resource Center. She said the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) was passed in 1990 to give all students the same opportunity and access to an adequate education. Every school in Clark County has an FRC.

She spoke specifically about the Strode Station center, which is located beside First Church of God on Colby Road, and addresses needs of families with children in kindergarten through fourth grade.

One of the center’s features is an in-school mentoring program for one hour each week. One of its volunteers is Mike Rowady. Strode Station also offers free lunches and provides food backpacks on Fridays for children needing these.

An annual event called Readifest will be Friday, July 27, at BCTC. Children attending this will receive free school supplies and backpacks. Approximately 1,000 people attended last year’s event. Rosalinda added the Kiwanis Club furnished back-to-school clothing for more than 500 children last year.

Following Rosalinda Gay’s discussion, Elizabeth Gay presented the AARP Community Service Award to Colista Ledford and gave her a food carrier.

The meeting concluded with Ledford reading the secretary’s report and Joyce Reffett sharing the treasurer’s report.

The next AARP meeting will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the James B. Allen Generations Center, 32 Meadow St. Everyone 50 years of age or older is invited.
