For young women looking to dress for less, the Girls’ Tea and Shopping Spree is the place to be.

The event, aimed at teenage and 20-somethings, will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Trapp School, 11400 Irvine Road, Phyllis Abbott, executive director at Lady Veterans Connect, said.

The event is put on by Lady Veterans Connect, a nonprofit dedicated to recognizing, honoring and assisting female veterans.

Visitors can shop for back-to-school clothing from a wide array of new tops, slacks, jeans, skirts, scarves and miscellaneous items all priced at $10 or less. All proceeds will benefit Lady Veterans Connect. Lady Veterans Connect is currently renovating the former Trapp Elementary School to house female veterans and their children with a maximum capacity of 35.

Abbott said clothing stores donated new clothing for the event. She said the selection includes various sizes and styles.

“Everything is new,” she said.  “School is about to start again and a lot of young ladies like to dress pretty but don’t always have the money to do it.”

This is the first year for this event, Abbott said, but the organization hopes to do more events like it in the future.

The goal of Girls’ Tea and Shopping Spree is to make a difference in women’s lives, she said.

“I have worked a lot in the homeless and low-income community, and I recognize young girls have a lot of peer pressure on them to look nice,” Abbott said. “They want to be in the ‘in crowd’ or they have to dress nicely. We want them to have that confidence.”
