Uplifting Ministries will be hosting its first golf classic Aug. 25 at 9 a.m. at Cassel Creek golf course.

Uplifting Ministries was founded by Winchester resident David Lane where it was first established in Guatemala.

Lane runs a comprehensive mission center in Guazacapan, Guatemala, which includes English lessons, youth groups, alcoholic feeding programs and child sponsorship programs.

The cost for the scramble is $75 per player or $300 per team which includes the game, golf cart, lunch and prizes. Hole sponsorships are available for $100 which includes a custom-printed sign on a hole of the course.

A $500 premium sponsorship is also offered which includes custom-printed signs, two entry fees and permission to put advertising in carts or goodie bags.

Whit Criswell, Senior minister of Cornerstone Christian Church, said he is excited for the event and hopes for it to eventually become annual.

“I am excited about it,” he said. “I know I could have done better as far as organization but I will do better next year, particularly getting teams. I’m excited and thankful for this opportunity. David has been in Guatemala for four to five years and this is the first time we have tried to do a scramble to help him financially. He raises his own funds with some other ministries helping him, but no major funding.”

Family minister of Cornerstone Adam Norsworthy said it is difficult to describe his excitement.

“Excited would be a good word and we are really hopefully,” he said. “Awareness is spread through certain events. David is a local and I think what he is doing is phenomenal to bring awareness to what he is doing around the world.”

Criswell said this event suits him perfectly as he has been a golfer all his life.

“Since I was 8, I have been playing golf,” he said. “It helped me get through college and my son through college. It has been a big part of my life. I have played in a lot of scrambles and Adam has too. We have played in a lot of golf tournaments to support different things like charities.”

The revenue the golf scramble will generate will help give more Guatemalans the opportunity to get out of poverty.

Teach to Fish is a program on the rise that Lane, Criswell and Norsworthy are all apart of which allows Guatemalans to be paid upfront and create certain artisan products to be resold in the states.

Norsworthy has a strong vision that this program will make a difference to those who need help.

“We are seeing these locals being lifted out of poverty,” he said. “Not by any handouts, but by working on their own. The advanced funding goes to the Teach to Fish program. We pay them for their time so they are employees making products. We bring those products back to make money back. If we make more, it goes back to the ministry to help another program.”

Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. on the Cassell Creek golf course and the shotgun will be at 9 a.m.
