With minimal effort, the community can have an enormous impact on a local project aimed at improving a local neighborhood.

Habitat for Humanity of Madison and Clark Counties is asking for the public’s help to earn a $25,000 grant to help with construction of five homes as part of the Lincoln Street rehabilitation project.

The nonprofit, which works with families to build safe, decent and affordable housing, applied for a State Farm Neighborhood Assist grant focusing on the Lincoln Street project where five new homes will be built following other rehabilitation efforts are completed.

Habitat Executive Director Russ Barclay was the agency is the homeownership partner for the project in partnership with the City of Winchester and urban development. The redevelopment project would widen the road to a standard two-way road and upgrade the sidewalks, water, sewer and street lights.

Then, Habitat will work with five families to build new homes on Lincoln Street with priority given to current Lincoln Street residents who qualify for the Habitat homeownership program.

The application has been selected as one of the top 200 community causes and is now part of an online voting contest. The top 40 causes based on the number of votes will each receive a $25,000 grant for their respective projects.

Votes can be cast for the Lincoln Street project at neighborhoodassist.com/entry/2012044. Voting is open through Friday, and each person can vote 10 times daily for the project.

As Barclay said, “In just a few seconds, voters can have a tremendous, transformative impact on the community and five families.”

There’s no better way to say it. Taking a few moments out of your day for the next few days could make a difference.

While the efforts on Lincoln Street will directly impact the families who live there or will live there, the project will have tremendous benefits for the broader community, adding to property values, adding to property tax rolls and encouraging more development in the area and more.
