George Rogers Clark picked up their first win Friday over the Harrison County Thorobreds in a 27-19 victory.

GRC received the opening kick off and capitalized on their third possession drive with a 41 yard touchdown run by Nitavius Thomas.

Harrison County failed to answer on their opening drive.

GRC fumbled and allowed Harrison to recover and tie the game 7-7 later that drive with a 25 yard touchdown pass.

Thomas once again gave the lead back to the Cardinals after running in his second touchdown of the night from three yards out.

Another GRC fumble provided Harrison the opportunity to tie the game, but the Thorobreds were unsuccessful.

Keaton Aldridge ended Harrison’s hopes with an interception halfway through the second quarter.

The Cardinals went on to extend their lead 21-7 with a touchdown catch by Isaiah Noland deep in the end zone just before the halftime whistle.

The Thorobreds stormed back to cut the deficit in the second half after another costly fumble by GRC, but failed to convert the extra point and GRC remained ahead 21-13.

Another forced fumble by the Cards allowed Harrison to recover, but they could not capitalize.

A five yard touchdown catch by Dawson Gay sealed the game for the Cardinals putting them ahead 27-13.

Harrison was able to put another touchdown on the board late in the fourth quarter, but the game was already out of reach.

Head coach Oliver Lucas said he would take an ugly win over a loss any day.

“We have got to learn how to win,” he said. “I would take a sloppy win over a hard-fought loss. One game at a time and that is how we play.”

Lucas was much more pleased with his teams productivity this week than he was with last week’s effort against Anderson County.

“We threw and ran the ball well,” he said. “I thought we had a pretty balanced attack. Sometimes we shot ourselves in the foot with mistakes and we need to cut those mistakes out.”

Lucas was proud of the determination his team had to win tonight’s game.

“They want to win and they want to be coached,” he said. “They just have some residue and baggage that they carry. The quicker they can let go of that, the better off we are going to be.”

The Cardinals will play their first home game of the season next Friday, Aug. 31 against Dunbar.

Lucas said his team is excited to play in front of their fans on their home field.

“Playing at home is always a good thing,” he said. “We are right in our backyard and we have to come out in play and be productive.”

Will Henry was named the game MVP and went 12/17 passing with 141 yards including three touchdown passes.

Thomas was the leading rusher with 15 rushes for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
