Celebrating school lunch week

Next week is National School Lunch Week, but Clark County Public Schools are celebrating early.

Justice Elementary School students competed in a coloring and drawing contest where students could color a lunch-themed photo or create their ideal menu.

Becky Lowry, director of food services at CCPS, said each class selected a winner, and the winner will receive an additional snack throughout the week.

Lowry said schools are celebrating National School Lunch Week (NSLW) to encourage students to eat at school and try the meals.

“We want to get the word out that we offer nutritious meals,” Lowry said.

Students are also entered into a drawing this week if they eat lunch provided by the school.

Veronica Boyd, school nutrition manager at Justice, said the cafeteria workers feed about 400 students a day. CCPS serves breakfast and lunch.

Former President John F. Kennedy created NSLW in 1962 to celebrate the National School Lunch Program — the largest federal nutrition program, according to the National Education Association’s website.

NSLW officially begins next week, Oct. 12-16, and its theme is “School Lunch Snapshot.”
