As the Nov. 6 election approaches, The Winchester Sun is beefing up coverage of the general election.

In today’s Sun you will find the first of three in-depth question and answer sessions with federal and state candidates

Candidates for Sixth District U.S. House of Representatives Andy Barr (R-Lexington) and Amy McGrath (D-Georgetown) sat down with Sun reporter Fred Petke to talk about everything from health care, battling the opioid epidemic, policy measures and more.

Reporter Lashana Harney and editor Whitney Leggett will offer similar opportunities in the coming weeks to 28th District state senate candidates Ralph Alvarado and Denise Gray and 73rd District state representative candidates Pat Banks and Les Yates.

On a larger scale, the Sun will once again publish its Meet The Candidates special section. In this section, we will provide candidates in contested races in the general election space to answer eight questions regarding their goals for public office, ambitions for the community and more.

Question topics range from tackling the opioid epidemic in our community to improving the business climate, balancing budgets and involving resident in the decision-making process.

Questionnaires were mailed to nearly 50 candidates Friday. All responses are due back by midnight Monday, Oct. 22, to be included in the special section that will be published prior to the election.

Over the years, this special section has served as a valuable tool for voters leading up to election day.

In addition to our election coverage, there are various other ways to learn more about candidates that will appear on the November ballot.

We recently livestreamed the Better Together Winchester community voter forum where contested candidates on city ballots addressed issues about inequality, fairness and giving a voice to the unheard. That forum can still be viewed on our Facebook page.

Later this month, there will be another candidates forum, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. nightly Oct. 22 and 23 at the Clark County Extension Office.

Those forums will include discussion from dozens on candidates running for federal, state and local office.

The best type of voter is an informed one.

With all these resources, there is no reason for voters not to understand where the candidates stand on important issues. We will once again be livestreaming those forums on our Facebook page.

Do you research before heading to the polls and use these tools to your fullest advantage.
