A Winchester man received a suspended sentence for allegedly making a comment to a store clerk about handing over the money in the register.

Archie Conner, 37, of 24 N. Burns Ave., was charged with attempted second-degree robbery in September after an incident at Family Dollar in downtown Winchester.

At the time of the incident, the clerk on duty said she believed Conner was serious, while Conner told police he was trying to make a joke. No money was taken from the store.

Wednesday in Clark District Court, Assistant County Attorney David Perdue said there was not enough evidence to support a robbery charge. Instead, Conner pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and sentenced to 30 days in jail, which was conditionally discharged for two years. He was also not to be in Family Dollar for two years.
