When it came to state and federal races, Clark Countians elected Republicans across the board.

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-Lexington) will spend a fourth term representing the sixth district of Kentucky in Congress after narrowly defeating his democratic opponent, Amy McGrath, Tuesday. Barr received 154,468 (51 percent) votes to McGrath’s 144,730 (47.78 percent).

Other candidates for U.S. representative included Frank Harris, the libertarian candidate, who garnered 2,150 votes, and independents Rika Wallin, with 1,011 votes, and James Germalic, with 522 votes.

State Sen. Ralph Alvarado (R-Winchester) will return to Frankfort to represent the 28th district for his second term after he defeated Denise Gray (D-Lexington) by around 3,000 votes. Alvarado garnered 23,212 votes (53.36 percent) to Gray’s 20,291 (46.64 percent) in the district which includes Clark, Montgomery and part of Fayette County.

Political newcomer Les Yates (R-Winchester) also defeated his Democratic opponent, Pat Banks of Richmond by 4,824 votes, garnering 64 percent of the votes in the 73rd district, which includes Clark and part of Madison County. Banks, an artist running for office for the first time, received 6,032 votes (35.73 percent).
