Winchester Fire battles Jackson Street house fire

A fire in a laundry room claimed the life of the owner’s cat Sunday night on Jackson Street.

Winchester Fire-EMS firefighters were called to the scene at 307 Jackson St. at 7:17 p.m. Winchester Fire-EMS Major Gary Henry said the owner, Mike Anderson, had returned home and saw flames coming from a room at the back of the house. Henry said the fire was contained to that room, but the rest of the house received “significant” heat and smoke damage.

At this point, the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, Henry said. There was a gas heater and a gas dryer in the room, he said, but the exact cause has not been determined.
