With the new year will come a few changes for Winchester Municipal Utilities customers.
To improve and streamline its current solid waste services, beginning the week of Jan. 7, WMU will provide trash, recycling, yard waste-seasonal and large bulky items on the same day.
Customers can view their specific collection day on WMU’s website.
Most customers have kept one of their previous collection days.
WMU requires customers to have all bins and disposal items to the curb by 7 a.m. on their collection day.
All of the items may not be collected at the same time but will be collected on the same day.
Winchester Municipal Utilities General Manager Mike Flynn previously told The Sun WMU officials offered the new plan to reorganize its garbage and recycling operations in an effort to keep the recycling program.
The costs of providing the service had continually increased throughout the year because the market for recyclables is down across the U.S. as China is buying less and less.
The new plan allows WMU to absorb the costs of the recycling program by realigning its collection schedule and becoming more efficient.
The plan divides Winchester into four areas and four routes.
Flynn told The Sun the change takes two trucks off the road but adds a second person to each truck on the route.
