Setting a record may be an exciting idea, but this being the wettest year on record for Central Kentucky isn’t helping when it comes to construction on Legacy Grove park.

They say, “when it rains it pours.” Well, it’s true in this case.

It’s rained or snowed on nearly two-thirds of the days in 2018 and that’s delayed construction. Crews will have to wait until the spring thaw for the final touches and park opening, now expected in late spring 2019.

Even so, crews will continue to work over the winter.

Community members will see a lot of activity in the front of Legacy Grove as the adventure play area is built over the next couple months, according to a press release from GCF.

Many new trees are visible in the front of the park near Lexington Avenue and many more will be planted.

Once the weather warms up in early spring, the one-mile, ADA-accessible, walking path and parking lots will be paved and new plants, shrubs and grass will be planted throughout the park, according to the release.

“We wish the weather had cooperated a bit more this year because we can’t wait for community members to experience Legacy Grove.” Beth Jones, program officer for The Greater Clark Foundation, said. “We are thankful for our construction team that is working to minimize delays and keep us on track as much as possible.”

A grand opening celebration will be planned for spring.

Located at 1107 W. Lexington Ave., Legacy Grove is a place to connect with neighbors, play, exercise and reflect. The park design and features stem from the input of nearly 200 Clark County residents through discussions, committee meetings, and even a Youth Design Team about how to repurpose the land where the former community hospital once stood.

The park will be established in 2019 as a gift to the community from The Greater Clark Foundation.
