Clay Street house fire under investigation

A fire that damaged a house on Clay Street Sunday night started somewhere in the attic, fire officials said.

Winchester Fire-EMS responded to a report of a structure fire at 76 Clay St. around 8 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire was already burning through the roof of the residence, Fire-EMS Battalion Chief Chris Whiteley said. Heavy smoke was coming from the eaves on three sides of the house.

The fire was contained to the attic, he said, and had spread before firefighters arrived.

The residents were not home at the time, but arrived later, he said. The Red Cross was called to help them find a place to stay.

At this point, nothing appeared suspicious about the fire, he said, but fire investigators were at the house later Sunday night.
