County starts weekly emergency siren tests

Clark County’s emergency siren system will get a weekly workout once again.

Clark County Emergency Management Director Gary Epperson said the tests resumed this week and will continue at noon on Wednesdays, unless there is bad weather expected.

Epperson said he recently spoke with employees of a business near one siren site and they said they didn’t know when they heard the sirens tested last.

“We’re getting ready for severe storm preparedness month in March,” Epperson said. “All of (the sirens) are working with the exception of Lykins Park. It has to be relocated.”

The sirens will run for a couple minutes, much shorter than when there is an actual emergency.

“If it looks like there will be thunderstorms or rain rolling through, they won’t” sound on Wednesday, he said. “We don’t want to confuse people.”
