Cards preparing for Indians in district play

The George Rogers Clark Cardinals have swept the 40th District for the third straight year and have only lost one district game the last three years.

The Cards will face Montgomery County at Bourbon County in the first round of the 40th District tournament Monday, a team GRC has beat by 30 or more points in both regular season meetings.

Head coach Robbie Graham said his team is going to continue playing how they’ve played all season and aren’t making any drastic changes for the postseason.

“We’re going to keep doing what we do,” he said. “We’re not going to change who we are or what we do. We’re trying to get as healthy as we can and compete, play hard and try to stay healthy.”

GRC has faced numerous injuries throughout to starters and other key players, but Graham said the team is finally pulling it together.

“We’re getting there,” he said. “We had a ding-up the other night against Frederick Douglass so I don’t know if we’ll have everybody for district. Hopefully we can compete, play hard and have a chance to go into regional play. Hopefully we’ll have everyone back for the region.”

Graham said he’s been impressed with how his team has responded and dealt with injuries.

“I think we’re coming along,” he said. “We’re coming together well and sharing the ball. We’re doing a better job defensively, but we need to tighten it up a bit more. We need to have quicker rotations on the defensive end, but we are looking forward to this postseason play. We’ve got some experience and these girls play a lot of basketball. They are very, very hungry so we are excited to tipoff the district tournament.”

Graham said his team will have a busy weekend preparing for Monday, but also said his team has been in playoff mode for the past few weeks already.

“We were talking a couple weeks ago that it was time for the postseason,” he said. “Your intensity and focus has to be razor sharp for the goals we’ve set for ourselves. We’ll come in Saturday and get some shots up. Then on Sunday we’ll come in and practice to prepare for Monday.”

GRC will tipoff against Montgomery County at 6 p.m. Monday at Bourbon County.
