AARP Chapter 632 met Jan. 29 at the James B. Allen Generations Center with President Sue Staton presiding.
Those in attendance were Betty Ballard, Joyce Barnes, Tammy Davis, Charles and Glyness Everett, James and Elizabeth Gay, Cindy Goff, Jeri Johnson, Colista Ledford, Bernice Lewis, Corina Martin, Lynn May, Bob and Janet Mays, Dorothy Moberly, Don Rose, Rosemarie Smith, Sue Staton, Georgetta Tolliver, Margaret Trusty and Jean Vaughn.
Corina Martin opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and Staton led the group in prayer. Colista Ledford reported that her niece, B.J. Kibbey, passed away recently.
Attendees sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to this month’s celebrants — Charles Everett, Lynn May and Dot Moberly.
Staton reminded us of the AARP motto, “to serve, not to be served,” and asked each member to bring prospective members to future meetings — “each one, get one” (EGO). It was noted that Cindy Goff brought two new members, Bob and Jan Mays.
Staton said she will bring provide a suggestion box to encourage us to submit any ideas that would benefit the chapter.
Following the potluck meal, Margaret Trusty, who once again is helping folks prepare their taxes, talked about changes in tax forms. She noted that volunteers will be offering free preparation at Central Baptist Church each Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the April tax deadline.
Don Rose, state advocate, told the group about the AARP KY Day at the Capitol to be held Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Frankfort. He will attend and invited others to join him. A mileage allowance and free lunch will be provided. Those interested should meet at the Generations Center and leave by 7:30 a.m. for the activities that are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Rose said the group needs to make an appointment with Sen. Ralph Alvarado or Rep. Les Yates, meeting in room 142 in the Capitol Annex. You will need to show ID and sign in. The meeting will be to convey what AARP expects of them; we are a large voting bloc with several thousand members.
More information regarding this event is available through Eric Evans, associate state director advocacy and outreach at AARP, at 502-394-3427. Instructions are available at 866-215-3402.
Staton asked for volunteers to help set up and clean up for our monthly meetings. Betty Ballard helped this month and Lynn May volunteered for February’s meeting.
Sue shared two housekeeping tips: — Once you crack an egg, simply run your dull scissors through the shell to sharpen them.
— Make your own furniture polish by whisking together 1 tsp. olive oil, 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 tsp. water.
Colista Ledford read the secretary’s report. Joyce Reffett, treasurer, was absent.
