The familiar marquee on Main Street won’t be advertising any new shows any time soon, unless something drastic changes. Once a staple in the Winchester community, this could be the last swan song for the Leeds Theater., thanks to increasing operating expenses and dwindling profits. It takes a minimum of $60,000 a year just to keep the doors open and the lights on, board president Mischelle Hodgkin told the Sun at the time.

Paula Joslin took the oath of office to become Clark County’s new circuit court clerk before Family Court Judge Jeffrey Walson. Joslin was appointed to the position after passing the clerk’s exam. She will serve until 2010, when a special election will fill the unexpired term of David Hunt, who passed away from cancer. Joslin worked in the circuit clerk’s office for 32 years and spent the last 15 years as chief deputy clerk.

The George Rogers Clark softball team suffered its first loss of the season with a 2-1 loss to Lafayette at the Warren East Invitational. Amy Haggard went the distance on the mound and finished with six strikeouts. Caitlin Collins led the team’s offense with a double, while Shamy Williams, Michelle Ladanyi, Haggard and Morgan Woosley each had one hit for Clark.

Members of the St. Agatha Academy Academic team took home first place in the district Governor’s Cup Academic Tournament. Members of the team were Dru Hoskins, Lindsay Wens, Graves Cowee, Chase Burchett, Sean Townsend, Jake Prewire, Cole Adams, Kim Kidd, Alice Johnston, Christ Campbell, Will Cheuvront, Wyn Saunier, Laine Rogers, John Rompf, Christopher Blackburn, Adam Brown, Pat Michell and Caleb Diederich.

Drew Graham, state representative from Clark County, was guest speaker at the March 14 meeting of the Clark County Woman’s Club held at the home of Sylvia Hays, South Main Street, with Carla Sibcy as associate hostess.

Rehearsals for the 5th annual Miss Clark County Scholarship Pageant will be held. Candidates for Miss Clark County are Carol Austin, Arlene Caudill, Janet Gawthrop, Karen Kohlbecker, Mary McCammish, Molly McCammish, Bridgett Parsons, Rita Peet and Elsie Watts. Tickets may be purchased at Roberts Jewelry Store.

The regular meeting of the Blue Grass Rebekah Lodge No. 114, Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, was held Thursday evening in the Odd Fellows Hall, South Main Street, with Mrs. Lena Gravett, vice-grand presiding.
Clark County’s 6-foot-6 senior Larry Gay was one of 12 high school cagers picked for a place on the all-tournament team of the Kentucky State High School Basketball Tournament. Guy, wearing the Cardinal uniform for the last time in his high school basketball career, was selected by the vote of sportswriters, sportscasters and participating coaches.

More than a dozen Winchester business houses are planning window displays next week in cooperations with the Office of Price Administration to show how costs of essential articles in World War II have been held far below the boom prices of World War I.
Vernon McClure Haggard was named eminent commander of Winchester Commandery No. 30, Knights Templar at the annual election of officers Tuesday night at the Masonic Temple. William Spears, the retiring commander, was presented with a past commander’s jewell by Dr. S.B. Lander. installing of new officers was held with Wallace H. Woods conducting the induction ceremonies.
