Spring brings a number of events with its arrival, including Earth Day later this month.

In recognition of Earth Day, the annual Main Street Clean Sweep will be April 22 beginning at 11:30 a.m. in downtown Winchester.

Winchester Stormwater Coordinator Shanda Cecil said the event is focused on picking up litter throughout downtown Winchester.

“Litter continues to be a problem in our community for whatever reason,” Cecil said. “If you go very far down the street, you find lots of litter. Ideally people would change their habits and not litter.”

The event usually collects about six bags of litter and garbage, she said. Participants can go anywhere they want in downtown to pick up litter. One year, one person did nothing but pick up cigarette butts in front of the Brown Proctor Apartments, she said.

“Cigarette butts are the most littered item in the United States,” Cecil said.

Trash bags and gloves will be provided, and all participants will receive an Earth Day T-shirt.

The event is presented by Bluegrass Greensource and commonwealth Credit Union. To register, go to www. bggreensource.org.
