The first drill took “forever” but it was worth the wait for Hayley Harrison.
The George Rogers Clark High School senior admitted her legs got “a little heavy” while trying out for the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star team last weekend, but it “was nothing I couldn’t handle.”
By the time it was all said and done, Harrison had achieved her goal and made the prestigious Kentucky-Indiana All-Star team. The Kentucky-Indiana All-Star game will be played at Louisville’s Bellarmine University on June 11 and at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on June 8.
“It’s a tremendous accomplishment for Hayley to make the All-Star team,” George Rogers Clark High School girls basketball coach Robbie Graham said. “It was impressive for her to tryout with some of the best players our state has to offer and make the team. Hayley has had a very successful career and making the Kentucky All-Star team is a fitting ending to her high school career.”
Harrison, a Tennessee-Martin signee, helped lead the Lady Cardinals to three consecutive 10th Region titles and scored more than 1,500 points in her career. She has played in the Kentucky-Ohio All-Star game and also the KABC East-West contest. She also played in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star game as a junior last season.
The tryouts consisted of one-on-one drills, five-on-five and scrimmages. Harrison said the five-on-five drills were “fun, because you got to see everyone else’s strength’s and weaknesses and showcase your own.” She also played in the post and made an impression.
“The practice wasn’t like your normal high school practice,” Harrison said. “Everyone wants to make the team, so everyone is pushing themselves.”
Overall, Harrison was elated when she landed one of the coveted spots on the team Sunday night.
“The whole experience was really fun,” she said. “When I got the news I made it, I was super excited. I felt very honored the coaches want me to help represent the state.”
