Kids Bucks Day Saturday at farmers’ market

Children will have the chance to choose $10 in fresh food at the Winchester-Clark County Farmers’ Market.

The catch is they can’t make their choice this weekend.

Saturday, the first 250 children younger than 13 at the market on Depot Street will receive two $5 vouchers, called Kids Bucks, market president Julie Staton said. The vouchers are good for a future visit to the farmers’ market.

“They can spend them on fruit, vegetables, meat, honey … anything fresh,” she said. “They don’t get to spend it that day. they have to come back another day to use them.”

The goal, she said, is to encourage children to make healthier food choices and to come back to the market.

There will be other events happening Saturday including live music and children’s activities by the school family resource centers and Winchester Inspired by Nature, she said. The Clark County Extension office will be on hand with plants, and there will be booths from Clark Regional Medical Center and the Alpha Group, she said.

The Kids Bucks program is sponsored by Sekisui and Delta Gas, she said.

The vouchers are usually claimed quickly, she said.

“Usually, in the first hour and a half, they’re gone,’ Staton said. “Sometimes (children) have been lined up at 8 a.m. waiting.”

The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday on Depot Street off North Main Street.
