A group bringing more than 500 teens and adults for work projects later this month need to borrow a few ladders.

Sixty to be exact.

Work teams from as far away as Minnesota and Florida will descend on Winchester June 23 as part of the Group work camp.

For a week, teams from dozens of churches will work on 69 project sites doing home repairs.

The groups, though, need local ladders, said Shannon Cox who is helping organize the camp in Winchester. It doesn’t matter the size of the ladder, he said, whether step ladders or extension ladders.

“We need about 60 of all sizes,” Cox said. “They will be painting and cleaning gutters and things like that.”

The project sites have already been selected, along with a dew alternates in case some finish early, he said.

This work camp, he said, will be Group’s largest this year and the first in Winchester since 2002.

“We have 441 kids as of 9 a.m. (Friday) and 111 adults that are going to help,” he said. Once the camp begins, all the teams will stay at Campbell Junior High School, he said.

Anyone with a ladder to loan can call or text Cox at 859-437-0135 and make arrangements to deliver the ladder or have it picked up.

“I’ll label the ladder when we pick them up,” he said. “We’ll get some folks the week before to pick them up. The week after they’re done, we’ll bring (the ladders) back.”

The teams will have a partial day off Wednesday to explore local attractions, he said.

Aside from helping local residents, there will be a financial impact from the work camp, he said. The group has a whole is expected to spend about $65,000 in the community while they are in Clark County.

“Out of their own pockets, they’ll probably spend that much again,” Cox said.
