A former University of Kentucky student charged with killing a Winchester boy is scheduled for a 2020 trial.
Jacob Heil, 18, was charged with reckless homicide and driving under the influence following the Sept. 17, 2018, death of 4-year-old Marco Shemwell of Winchester. Heil allegedly struck Shemwell with his car two days earlier on Cooper drive. Shemwell and his family were going to a University of Kentucky football game.
According to published reports, Heil appeared in Fayette Circuit Court Friday and his trial was scheduled to begin April 6, 2020.
Heil was accused of driving under the influence at the time of the crash. Court documents indicated he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.05, well above the limit of 0.02 for those younger than 21.
Reckless homicide carries a sentence of one to five years in prison upon conviction. Driving under the influence is a misdemeanor which carries fines, a license suspension and possible jail time.
