A Clark County mother and her boyfriend were indicted for assault and criminal abuse after an 18-month-old child received serious head injuries earlier this year.

Mariska White and Michael McKinney are now facing first-degree assault and first-degree criminal abuse charges.

McKinney was arrested in April by Winchester Police, but White had not been charged previously, police said.

Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said state social workers were involved in the case before police were notified by officials at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Hall said White and McKinney were told by social workers once to seek medical attention and a follow up appointment, but apparently did not do it in a timely fashion.

“They were supposed to do a follow-up and weren’t that speedy about it,” Hall said. “It looked like (the child) had worsened and were told to do it immediately.”

Hall said the child had severe head injuries from being shaken and having its hair pulled to the point of nearly separating the child’s scalp.

“We believe McKinney had assaulted the child over the course of a couple days,” Hall said. “The mother was there and didn’t take any steps to help the child.”

Hall said there was evidence of previous injuries but they could not be connected to an assault.

The child was removed from the home and is expected to recover, he said.

The grand jury also indicted a Clark County woman for criminal abuse after she allegedly dragged her child down a carpeted hallway during an argument.

Kaitlen Combs, 23, and her boyfriend John Goodwin were both arrested in April by Winchester Police after the child’s injuries came to light.

According to court documents, detectives were notified by officials at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, where the child was treated.

In an interview with police, Combs reportedly admitted to dragging the child during an argument. Police also said she threatened the child with putting her in foster care during the argument.

The child, which was 7 years old, had burns on the back from the incident.

Goodwin told police he did not see the incident, but Combs told him and helped treat the child’s injuries. Goodwin, though, did not report the incident and left the child in Combs’ care, police said.

Both were indicted for one count each of first-degree criminal abuse.
