Lights Over Lykins: Festivities coming soon for July 4

This year’s annual 4th of July event has got a new name with the hopes of being bigger and better than ever before.

Kim Miller, chair of the planning committee for the 4th of July event, said this year’s fireworks and festivities, which is now a joint county and city effort, will be Thursday, July 4, at Lykins Park with a rain date of July 5. Gates open at 6 p.m.; DJ Lynn Toler will start music and games start at 7 p.m., and fireworks begin at 10 p.m. The litter-free event is also free to attend.

Amazon is also a corporate sponsor of Lights Over Lykins helping to fund an even larger fireworks display than in year’s past, Miller said. Other sponsors include the city and county government, Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation, Winchester Municipal Utilities, 107.7, Hammerhead Signs, Bypass Rental and more. Miller said the committee is also still accepting donations.

Attendees can also photos under the event’s new hashtag, #winlightslykins, on various social media platforms.

Food vendors, which committee member Lori Stone is in charge of this year, include JiRL Foods, Kathy’s Snack Shack, Kettle Masters, Hammerdown Grill, Sweet Tooth Fairy, Sibbie’s Street Treats, an Ale-8-One trailer and more.

Miller said there will be more games this year for children as committee members Lindsay Tuttle and Tina Paynter have taken over that portion of the event and are planning to bring back the popular hula-hoops contest along with other games such as a sack race, gum-drop toss and more. There will also be bounce houses.

Students in the Winchester Police Department or Clark County Fire Department Explorer Program will be in charge of directing parking this year.

Miller said she hopes everyone comes out to the community fireworks event.

“We’re having this amazing event, and it’s going to be fun,” she said.
